When Jesus called him, Matthew he was a tax collector. When He called him, Peter he was a fisherman. When He called Paul he was a man whose name was Saul, who was a staunch opponent of the early church, arresting Christians, entering their homes, and sending them to prison. This same Paul writes in Romans that “while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.” God wasn’t waiting for us to “get our act together.” In our unbelief and in our rebellion, He called us just as we were.
